First of all, what does an ultrasound technician actually do? It’s a good question, especially for those who are still unsure. As you probably know, ultrasound technicians provide information and imaging to expecting mothers of their newborn babies, and this in itself is a wonderful service. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, mothers will be able to see quite a bit of detail, and will ultimately be able to determine whether their child will be male or female.

The other function of an ultrasound technician is helping to diagnose certain medical conditions. Though many will associate ultrasounds with pregnancy, they do not always HAVE to be related to pregnancy! That being said, how does one break into this field?

Training can begin after high school, and you will need to make sure you attend either a two year college for your associate’s degree or a four year college for your bachelor’s degree. Note that those who hold a bachelor’s degree may have more opportunities, but it should be noted that the opportunities in this field are virtually endless. You do not necessarily need to pass a certification as you will be able to practice in your field regardless, but if you want to be taken seriously then it would be a good idea for you to sit for the ARDMS, or American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Not only will you be proud of yourself for achieving this, it will also help you to get a job faster.
